Andrei Mikhailovich's new challenge outside the ring' "I feel like I can build a generation of fit, active people."
At just 24 years of age, Andrei Mikhailovich — the undefeated two-division New Zealand champion — has the boxing world at his feet.
The Russian-born fighter's most recent foray into the ring saw him pick up a stunning first-round stoppage win over Australian veteran King Davidson in Queensland, Australia. The win has set Mikhailovich up for even more high-profile opponents in the future as he works his way towards earning himself a shot at a middleweight world championship.
It would be easy for Mikhailovich to focus on himself at this point in his life, but there has always been a part of him that wanted to use the tools he had learned from boxing and overcoming personal struggles to help others.
It's why he quit his job as an engineer late last year to start his own company, The 3FL- Fighting Fit For Life. The 3FL is a four-month program designed to help improve people's physical and mental health, with each program tailored specifically for the individual client's needs.
" We want people to live their life to the fullest, and the fullest to us is fitness of the mind, body, and soul, and with the 3FL, it is in the title itself, Fighting For Life, we want to give you a launchpad for the rest of your life," Mikhailovich says.
Mikhailovich's desire to help improve people's lives stems from his turbulent adolescence, which saw him drinking at a young age and battling internal self-esteem issues, some of which had their roots in his adoption from a Russian orphanage.
After discovering his passion for boxing, Mikhailovich was able to turn his life around, but he has not forgotten what it was like for him during those years.
"It's almost like I want to help the 15-year-old version of myself who was lost and didn't have a path. I want to give that person hope and give them somewhere where they can go, " Mikhailovich explains.
"My whole youth, my whole teenagehood, was pretty random, and that's just relative to me. I know for a fact that people have had a lot worse than me, but I had my demons from being adopted.
"I had no confidence in myself. I always felt like an ugly duckling. I never felt like I fitted in anywhere; I found it frustrating. Even socializing was something I was not good at, but the man I was then to the man I am today, I changed it all, my perception of myself, " he says.
"There is a perception of yourself that is so important, and having that inner belief and faith is something I really want to teach people, and I believe I can do that."
Based out of Te Atu Pennusuila, The 3FL program sees clients coming in for one-on-one sessions, where they go over their training routine and talk about their honesty diary. The honesty dairy is where the clients record their food, fitness, and feelings for each day, allowing them to keep track of their physical and mental progress.
"People learn on the first day in the course that what they put in they will get back. So, of course, you're going to be able to motivate them and inspire them, but it's really on them, and that's the best part that I love is when they see the results," Mikhailovich says.
"You have four months, and what will happen after those four months. We feel you will be set up for the rest of your life. So you will know what it takes to get fit, what it takes to lose weight."
At the moment, it is just Mikhailovich and one other mentor, but the business's success has meant he is currently hiring more staff to meet the growing demand. The work is demanding, especially when you add it to his already busy training schedule, but Mikhailovich would not want it any other way.
" It's something that I love is helping people and seeing people get results and giving back in my own way because I feel that's important," he says.
"I feel like I can build a generation of fit, active people. It's something I'm passionate about and something I believe I will do.
Mikhailovich is already making his presence felt inside the ring, but his work outside of the ring may soon start to see him gain even more attention.
